Inquiry ordered into undertrial’s mysterious death in Gumla prison

Gumla: Gumla deputy commissioner Sashi Ranjan on Saturday ordered an inquiry into the loss of life of Tulsi Oraon, a 26-year previous under-trial, on the Gumla sub-divisional jail. Oraon died in the early hours of Friday after being allegedly injured in a brawl in the jail.

Sources said Oraon, a resident of Sarjama village under Ghaghra police station, was in Gumla jail since December on charges of homicide. They said he got into a brawl with some inmates on Thursday night time.


The jail management, however, denied that any brawl took place however said Oraon all of sudden fell unwell and that led to his loss of life. “There was no brawl in the jail. Oraon fell unwell round middle of the night on Thursday and we took him to the sanatorium at 12.25am. Doctors declared him died at 12.40am,” jail superintendent Besra Nishant Robert said. “I've requested the deputy commissioner for a magistrate’s inquest,” he said.


Rajan said he has deputed circle officer (sadar) Kushalmay Keneth Mundu to probe the incident. Gumla SDM and DSP had inspected the jail on Saturday and scenario was customary inside the premises, he said.
