KOLKATA: Scores of visitors from Kolkata who have been booked on flights to Sri Lanka over the following two weeks cancelled their journeys on Monday and began exploring choice destinations. City trip agents look forward to that nearly 100% of the flight tickets booked for the island country will probably be cancelled within the next couple of days. Many now plan to visit other destinations like Bali, Maldives, Macau, Hong Kong and Mauritius, which might soon witness a spurt in bookings, consistent with trip agents. Almost part of those planning to visit Sri Lanka between May and June are likely to go for other destinations, the agents suppose.
“Almost all holiday journeys to Sri Lanka are going to be cancelled. We’ve been flooded with calls and inquiries about other destinations since Sunday. We are providing Maldives, Mauritius and Hong Kong to people who have been travelling in May and June. Many are in a position to change. Those booked on flights this week, on the other hand, have cancelled their journeys,” said Joydeep Mukherjee of Meghdootam Travels.
Alternative destinations would be costlier, said Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) chairman Anil Punjabi. “We are asking our shoppers to attend and watch if they are travelling next month. Those scheduled to leave this week will clearly be cancelling journeys. Eventually, Sri Lanka will lose the summer time holiday crowd to other destinations,” said Punjabi, whose agency ARES Travels is providing choice packages for Maldives, Mauritius, Bali, Hong Kong and Thailand.
Each of those destinations would be 30%-40% costlier than Sri Lanka the place a three nights-Four days family shuttle value not up to Rs 1 lakh. “Other destinations, particularly Hong Kong and Mauritius would value more. But those having a look ahead to a shuttle in another country will ultimately accept an alternative. We, too, are more pleased with folks staying away from Sri Lanka,” added Punjabi.
Facilities like visa on arrival and inexpensive flight tickets have been the foremost criteria for those planning a Lanka shuttle, said Mukherjee. “An choice destination should have a an identical price range. So, we are planning journeys which are short and fits the price range of our shoppers. We have received numerous enquiries about Maldives and Bali thus far,” said Mukherjee. He added the island country was once now a ‘closed sector’ and will probably be kept away from through tourists and trip agents.
Dolphin Travels withdrew all its Lanka journeys on Monday. They have been replaced through journeys to China, south-east Asia and Europe. “All our shoppers have referred to as off Sri Lanka journeys. From Tuesday, we will be able to get started providing them journeys to China and southeast Asia,” said Raktim Roy of Dolphin. Some trip agents are also helping tourists to cancel on-line bookings in Sri Lanka.
