'Make bars & pubs smoking free zones'

BENGALURU: The state excise division has ordered that premises with excise permit — bars, pubs and eating places — be made smoking-free zones.

According to a directive, the step seeks to curb secondhand smoking. As in step with the Karnataka Protection of Non-Smokers Act 2001, inns aren't allowed to have smoking rooms. Adherence to this rule may be an important consumer right for all passive smokers.

The excise commissioner has, in an order on March 22, 2019, asked officers to verify all excise-licensed institutions are made smoke-free zones. “In case the licensee has to provide smoking space on the premises, he has to mandatorily take a no-objection certificate from municipal government,” it learn. Smoking in public puts is illegal below the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2013.
