Moving of power lines delays NH 17-B work

PANAJI: The ongoing work to widen and convert NH 17-B as a four-lane highway seems to have hit a pace bump at Verna due to delays in isolation and transferring of utility products and services, like power lines and telephone cables. The delay has sparked fear amongst industrialists at Verna Industrial property who worry that failure to finish the mission before the monsoons may just create unnecessary inconvenience for movement of raw subject material, finished merchandise and commuters alongside the stretch.

Highlighting the issue, Verna Industries Association (VIA) has recommended the state executive to offer additional budget to facilitate the transferring of underground utility products and services.

“The cost to shift utilities isn't incorporated within the tender, which the Centre floated,” VIA president Damodar Kochkar stated. “It is known that they have got provision of only Rs 15 lakh as towards Rs 1.25 crore required only to shift overhead electrical lines.”

The NH 17-B link connects NH 17-B with NH 4 and passes in the course of the Verna Industrial Estate and Loutolim. PWD has taken up the ambitious mission because it objectives to cut back the distance and time taken to go back and forth between Mormugao and Belagavi by means of Ponda.

The VIA has raised its considerations with the BJP-led state executive and has additionally taken up the matter with the relevant ministries. “In spite of continuing illustration, nothing has been accomplished about this. These underground utilities have been kept as it is beneath the street, however now the contractor can't pass forward with work because the overhead electrical lines and installation also are not shifted,” Kochkar stated.

“Most of the work is on, however, sure, there are minor problems in transferring of a few cables,” stated principal leader engineer of PWD Utam Parsekar. “We are running on them.”

VIA, which has held several conferences with PWD, insists that the state executive has failed to grasp the plight of the commuters and the trade. To make issues worse, says Kochkar, the election procedure has paralysed the functioning of the industries. “All electricity sub-station officials have been assigned to election duty. If the decision isn't taken quickly then the street work will not get finished before monsoon and Verna industries will face hardships,” stated Kochkar.
