Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday accused the BJP-led NDA executive at the Centre of seeking to wreck the ecology at Chilika lake, Asia’s greatest brackish waterbody identified for its unique biodiversity.
“The central executive was conspiring to break the ecosystem of Chilika. It may have affected thousands of fishermen who depend on the lake for his or her livelihood,” Naveen stated at an election rally in Banapur under Chilika assembly constituency. “Your BJD executive has foiled the conspiracy. Chilika is like our mom, it’s the satisfaction of Odisha. It offers livelihood alternatives to many. I can not permit its destruction until my ultimate breath,” the BJD president added.
While Naveen didn't elaborate, he was clearly hinting at the Centre’s proposal to develop a water aerodrome mission in Chilika lagoon, which was later scrapped following stiff opposition from the state executive and environmentalists. The mission, if it had long gone ahead, would have negatively impacted the ecosystem of the lake and the population surrounding it.
Naveen additionally took on the BJP for its criticism of the state executive for obstructing the 415-km Digha-Gopalpur coastal freeway mission. “Let me come to the coastal freeway mission. The BJP executive (at the Centre) wants to widen the present roads via destroying lakhs of homes. You let us know, lets maintain folks’s hobby or that of contractors?” Naveen asked.
