KANPUR: Recounting the concern and surprise following the derailment of the Poorva Express, passengers of the the Howrah-New Delhi bound educate said it was once a "night of horror".
Satendra Kumar, a pantry-car staffer and a local of Raebareli, who suffered accidents on his leg and again in the derailment, said, "After dinner, I along with others was preparing for a sleep. Suddenly I felt the train tilting to one side. It tumbled over before I could get up. There were loud shrieks coming from almost every coach."
Satendra added, "Later, a few of us got out to check what had happened and we saw to our shock that the train had divided into two, just after our Pantry coach."
Travelling in sleeper coach, Pawan Singh of Lakhisarai Bihar and Ravindra of Aurangabad said, "We heard some vibration in the coach. Then a very loud bang was heard and the train immediately came to a stop. Despite, it was pitch dark outside, many passengers alighted leaving their luggages behind in the derailed compartment out of fear," they said.
Rajesh Chowdhary of Jharkhand, was once also slumbering on the upper berth when the coincidence came about. "A sharp jerk accompanied by a screeching sound woke me up. The next thing I knew I was on the floor of the compartment. Luggage was strewn around and some of my co- passengers were shouting for help. It was a night of horror and I was thinking of death. This one night will haunt me forever," he said.
Chowdhary additional said after some time Railway, RPF and GRP officials arrived, and asked the passengers to stay calm. "They later asked us to board a bus, which later took us to Kanpur Central railway station, about 15 to 20 kilometre from the accident spot," he said.
Meanwhile, Public Relation Officer (NCR) Amit Malviya said, a high-level inquiry workforce has been formed to probe the incident. The panel has been asked to put up a file soon and strict motion can be initiated if any individual is found accountable for the coincidence.
