KULPI: An adolescent from Haridevpur on the town’s southern fringes drowned in the Hooghly while clicking selfies, reportedly in an drunk state, at Kulpi’s Nabadwip Ghat on Friday afternoon.
The deceased, Rajib Das (18), a Class-XII scholar of a faculty in his neighbourhood, had long past to Kulpi with five buddies on Friday morning. They reached around 1pm and had lunch on the river financial institution. Locals said the six have been consuming alcohol.
After lunch, the boys began to stroll along the river financial institution, clicking pictures. Around three.30pm, as they walked on a slim stretch of the financial institution, Das misplaced his balance and fell into the river.
His buddies and locals said Das was once pulled in deep through the waves that receded fast because of top tide. Within moments, Das drowned, even though his buddies and locals jumped into the river to rescue him.
“We saw the boy taking selfies in various poses. We expected danger having a look on the method they have been walking. We even warned them, but they did not heed our advice. They had ate up liquor prior to that,” said Pratima Mondal, a neighborhood.
Kulpi police station OC Sudip Singh said, “We rushed to the spot. Local divers have been deployed to release a rescue operation. A disaster management crew, too, reached the spot and joined in the rescue efforts. We have detained the deceased’s buddies for wondering.”
Das’s father Bapi said, “Rajib informed me that he wanted to visit Diamond Harbour with his buddies. They later determined to visit Kulpi. I don’t know the way this happened. I do not suspect any foul play.”
