Surat’s Old Civil Hospital stares at disaster: SVNIT

SURAT: The construction of Old Civil Hospital, built by way of the British at Chowk Bazaar in 1857, is in a precarious condition.

A workforce of structural engineers belonging to Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology in its record submitted a month in the past to the state executive has mentioned that the dilapidated structure may just collapse anytime.


However, the authorities concerned are but to vacate and a minimum of 350 individuals are still being treated day-to-day at its outdoor patient division (OPD) in the hospital premises.


Around 25 nursing body of workers, three medical officials, a dentist, a paediatrician, a few pores and skin specialists and two eye surgeons still work here. Ophthalmologists perform some 25 eye operations day-to-day in this construction. Many departments have been shifted to New Civil Hospital in 1968 and paediatric and gynaecology wards closed here in 2010 simplest.


Medical superintendent Dr Rishi Mathur informed IdealNews that the hospital can be vacated from the old construction inside a week’s time and that the work would start for a brand new structure at the place once the style code of conduct is lifted after the Lok Sabha election.


The structural engineers, who have been asked to evaluate the structural stability of the heritage construction, have of their record urged its rapid demolition. Dr Atul Desai, a member of the workforce of structural engineers, mentioned, “The structure is product of wood and is in extremely dangerous condition. It can collapse anytime and people should be moved out of here in an instant.”


Dr Mathur mentioned, “We have started the method to issue gentle for new building at the premises. The work should start once the election procedure concludes. We can be vacating the premises throughout the next 10 days. We are on the lookout for some house to run the OPD from there for 18 months.”
