Unique behaviour of jumping spider observed

Mangaluru: Jumping spiders, particularly salticids, don't build their own webs. They loosen up underneath or on leaves and build a web just for dragline. Araneidae—popularly referred to as orb-weaver spiders—are identified to build beautiful webs all over the night time and this web is just for catching prey. On the other hand, salticids or leaping spiders, bounce on their prey.

A group of researchers together with David E Hill from the United States, Dr Abhijith A P C, a doctor and a agriculturist from Indraprastha Organic Farm, Mysuru, Prashantha Krishna, an engineer from Kasaragod and Sanath Ramesh an MSc entomology pupil from Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada, in their paper ‘Construction of orb webs through leaping spiders,’ printed in Peckhamia—early this month, have noticed leaping spider in mid-web for nocturnal retreats.

Speaking to TOI, Dr Abhijith mentioned, “we've discovered a small salticid tentatively recognized as Anarrhotus species— relative of Malaysian species Anarrhotus Fossulatus. The orb- webs constructed through those spiders appear to be occupied best all over the night time, and there's no proof to suggest that they play a role within the seize of prey. Both juveniles and adults were noticed in those orb-webs.

Each orb-web is constructed from a platform of silt laid down at the hub of a series of silk lines, radiating from this hub in a in large part vertical plane. At night time, those salticids rest in this platform. “The web building is not as beautiful as orb weavers. It has easy suspended webs that it has created to lie best within the night time. This almost certainly offers the spider a 360-degree view, when resting mid web, or it is just to flee from others through getting camouflaged in its own web. From Goa to Kerala we've noticed those spiders. The subsequent paper could have more other attention-grabbing findings of the same species,” mentioned Dr Abhijith.

This commentary is an important and can be a main leap forward for other observations someday. Future research may depend on this. Only 30 according to cent of the entire spider population builds webs, explained Dr Abhijith.
