Auto drivers lose licenses for refusing short rides

RTO officers posed as passengers during the last two months; 5,000 auto drivers penalised for quite a lot of offences; 2,600 licences seized, of which 700 have been cancelled for refusing to ply short distances

Addressing probably the most largest concerns of the suburban commuter, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has cancelled the licences of over 700 auto drivers who refused to ply short distances. A power was once conducted from February 28 to May 2 to crack down on errant auto drivers. RTO officers posed as passengers to catch such drivers redhanded while refusing fares.

A total of 5,212 auto drivers have been stuck flouting quite a lot of regulations, for which 2,600 licences have been seized. Among them, 705 licences have been cancelled for refusing to ply. Other offences included overcharging, sporting more than 3 passengers and using with out licence or badge. A total of 171 auto rickshaws have been also seized all through the power.

Transport Commissioner Shekhar Channe told Mirror, “We are aware of the inconvenience caused via auto rickshaw drivers who refuse to ply.” He added that the power will continue for a few more months.


“On the direction of the transport commissioner, 14 flying squads have been running within the town to crack down on errant auto drivers,” said assistant regional transport officer Tanaji Chavan, who is main the power. He confirmed that the licences of over 700 drivers have been cancelled for refusing short distance fares.

The RTO officials and clerical workforce, who have been part of the flying squads, video recorded the power in order that it will assist end up their case in case the drivers determined to enchantment before a tribunal or court.


An RTO officer explained that once a motive force's licence is seized via the transport division, the motive force is given a chance to end up his innocence. "After that, the decision of cancellation of licence is taken by the competent authority. Once the licence is cancelled, drivers can appeal in a tribunal, but it's not an easy process," said the respectable. He added that while creating a case against each and every motive force, the proof against them, including video recording, is attached, to minimise the possibilities of reissuing licences that are cancelled.
