Cama Baug marks 150-year anniversary with prayers

Members of the Parsi neighborhood come in combination to reminisce and percentage a meal.

Last month Cama Baug, which also houses the oldest agiary in Mumbai, finished 150 years. The anniversary was celebrated with prayers and a dinner inside the advanced.

For one of the vital old-timers and conventional Parsis, the Baug is an emblem of union, as numerous weddings and navjotes were held right here since April 30, 1869.

“It is the cheapest venue for weddings and navjote ceremonies,” said Anahita Desai, CEO of WAPIZ World Alliance of Parsi Irani Zarthoshtis.

“We have the Colaba agiary, the place weddings are held, there is Albless Baug on Charni Road, too. But Cama Baug is essentially the most economical venue for having our form of open air weddings and navjotes. Everyone has greater their prices dramatically. For the middle magnificence this is essentially the most affordable and they have improved facilities with an air-conditioned corridor. It may be essentially the most traditional and orthodox of all the neighborhood venues – no intermarriages may also be celebrated in Cama Baug.”

Most of the body of workers at Cama Baug were serving for decades and all were felicitated on the serve as on April 30.

“It was widespread as a fireplace temple formerly and the whole house of Khetwadi was a Parsi house,” said Khushroo Jamshedji Press, managing trustee, Cama Baugh.

“Just to ensure that the hearth temple doesn’t get starved of budget, the baug was in-built 1869 to carry purposes like weddings and navjotes. The revenue from the baug would stay the hearth temple alive. It is an open air birthday party corridor. The other baug is elitist. The rent they rate is Rs 1.25 lakh for an evening and for lights it's Rs 50,000. There is any other baug charging Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 for lights. The bulk of Parsis who can have enough money go there. This isn’t inclusive of catering and other expenses facilities. So the tendency is for the lower middle magnificence to go to inns and have their purposes or a dinner party corridor. But then the nostalgia price of having an open-air serve as is misplaced. So we have been striving to stay our charges as low as possible.”

Cama Baugh fees Rs 6,000 rent and Rs 15,000 for the lights in step with serve as.

“It makes it affordable for lots of Parsis however we stay upgrading our facilities. Out of 365 days a 12 months, 110 days are booked. We have the perfect occupancy charge,” said Jamshedji Press.

The agiary development is a listed Grade II A heritage construction and the trustees are very mindful in their history.

“We don’t make any external adjustments. But of late the BMC has upped the marketplace price of the valuables. The believe desires to stay the charges affordable but the money charged isn’t sufficient to pay the valuables taxes and salaries of the body of workers,” Jamshedji Press said.

On their 150th anniversary, Cama Baugh launched any other scheme to generate budget.

“Lots of other people hold their purposes. There are many that spend a lot on decoration. We got a large corridor within the centre and there is a dining house, sitting house and a degree. Last 12 months we opened a small room as a dressing room for hosts who come from some distance off puts, for which we charged Rs three,000. This has stuck on smartly. Now we have long gone one step additional at the 150th 12 months and put in a 20 tonne air con within the large corridor and rate further Rs 15,000. If they don’t want AC, they may be able to still use the corridor. There may be jashn ceremony, which is like a havan performed throughout birthdays and auspicious events,” Jamshedji Press said.
