Do we eat to reside or do we live to eat? While it in large part will depend on what age we are at, another incontrovertible fact that governs this facet is the place the place you've food. If it's at the canteens of the Central University of Gujarat in Gandhinagar, chances are high that you're going to eat handiest up to is needed to stay you alive.

After all, going for a 2nd helping after pulling out a useless fly from the first is an option no longer many would consider. Students at CUG say they have been struggling with over a year now as a result of deficient quality of food and have even had instances of food poisoning. Acidity has change into a not unusual grievance, they say.

Spread over two campuses— sector 29 and sector 30—in Gandhinagar, CUG has two canteens which cater to almost 900 students, together with hostellers. Of those, around 300 eat there incessantly. But the standard of food as well as the standard of hygiene leaves a lot to be desired, say students. When Mirror visited the canteen in sector 29, neither did it have a kitchen nor correct arrangements for cooking. Not simply this, the place out of doors the kitchen was once filthy.

Raj Kumar, co-convener of students’ council and secretary of canteen committee at CUG, said, “Approximately 40 students reportedly fell in poor health over the past one year after eating food from the canteen. We have conveyed the situation to the convener and the canteen committee and will try to take action once possible.”

The contract of food at both the canteens has been given to the same contractor. Students declare that the company neither follows prescribed guidelines nor carries out common inspection. They say they had submitted a written grievance to the school administration in this regard. When contacted, the government said that once students suffered food poisoning remaining year, the school had cancelled that individual company’s contract and hired another one. However, students say the food quality stays substandard.

‘No selection but to eat there’

Students say they feel helpless as they have to depend on canteens for food in spite of its deficient quality as they have little selection. The loss of hygiene may be affecting them, they declare. Sumeet Chaudhary, 2nd year scholar of BA Chinese, alleged that eating canteen food for a long left them sick.

“The dal served within the canteen is usually blended with water. They don't even serve nutritious food. We don't wish to possibility eating there, but we don’t have any option. I have suffered from food poisoning remaining semester and needed to take medications value Rs 2,000. We keep away from home and do not have much cash on us. The faculty administration will have to perceive this,” he said.

Not simply the dal, even the roti is coarse and tough, the rice is both part cooked or over cooked. Fahim Siddique, 2nd year scholar of BA German said, “The canteen body of workers doesn’t even wash hands before serving food, which is anyway substandard and of deficient quality. I have suffered food poisoning as a result of canteen food and steadily suffer from acidity as a result of the substandard oil.”

Sachin Kumar, scholar of BA German, said, “Sometimes food is served in plates with cleaning soap stains. When you talk over with the kitchen, you can see boiled potatoes lying exposed at the floor.” Vijay Mishra, a PhD scholar in chemical science, said, “The canteen is a messed-up position. There is no quality maintained for a number of years now. The institute does no longer take motion.”

‘There will have to be common inspection’

Raghu Solanki, convenor of the student council and member of the canteen committee said, “The need of the hour is to implement stringent guidelines for upkeep of quality food and hygiene requirements, especially proposed via UGC for school canteens. Further the school will have to be certain that common inspection. We have complained a number of times to the administration.

They are trying their best to solve this factor. Even after this, if our canteen contractor doesn’t supply good quality and hygienic food, we can take motion towards them.” Ironically, the dean of scholar welfare Dr Sanjay Jha claimed the school had no longer received any grievance regarding food quality in recent times. However he confident that motion would be taken if the sort of grievance was once received.

University speaks

The college has reportedly issued three caution letters to the canteen contractor for serving substandard and unhygienic food. Dean of Student Welfare Dr Sanjay Jha said, “Last year we had received lawsuits of stale food as a result of which students suffered food poisoning. We immediately cancelled the contract of the food provider. The new canteen contractor has been operating for 8 months now and students complain about unhygienic and deficient quality food now and then. We have issued warnings to the chief and in the event that they don’t fortify we can cancel their contract too.”

He added, “We have a gathering with the canteen committee on a per month foundation to address and solve problems. The style will not be constant. But we attempt to verify a undeniable same old via telling the canteen supervisor each time we get lawsuits. As of now I have no longer received lawsuits of food poisoning. If we do receive, we can immediately take motion.”
