Ejipura’s ‘Saalumarada Thimakka’ has plantedd 73,000+ timber thus far in her husband’s reminiscence

On June five, 2006, she planted a honge tree near her house in reminiscence of her husband. Today, 13 years later, on World Environment Day, the 68-year-old Janet Yegneswaran sits down to appreciate the majestic tree, which began her off on a project that is now impacting the planet. To date, Janet has planted 73,000 saplings in Bengaluru and in other portions of Karnataka. And all of it started by planting saplings in her neighbourhood.

If all goes well, Janet, a resident of Ejipura in south Bengaluru, is all set to succeed in the milestone of planting 75,000 saplings in a few days.

“It’s a proud moment to look the honge sapling planted by me, develop right into a tree, near my house,” says Janet.

Janet’s tree-planting project started in September 2005 when she misplaced her husband, RS Yegneswaran. “That was the time when Bengaluru was seeing massive scale felling of timber for building. Since I felt very passionately for the lack of tree quilt in Bengaluru, my friends suggested I do a dharna. But I felt I sought after to do something a little extra productive. I formed the Rajanet Yegneswaran Charitable Trust in reminiscence of my husband and determined to absorb planting of saplings within the neighbourhood.”

Janet knew that if she sought after to construct scale, she would have to do a lot more than plant saplings in her personal garden. It would mean involving the group. So she and a few volunteers, went across the neighbourhood asking people if they would be willing to look after saplings planted at the highway. “The response was lukewarm.

While some agreed, others didn't support me. But I did not surrender,” says Janet.

Green thumb: Luckily for Janet, her enjoy of operating as a panorama clothier at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium for a few years, stood her in just right stead. She had domain expertise in choosing the right kind of saplings relying at the house through which they have been going to be planted. She started planting saplings in 2006 and continues until today. But she has long past past the neighbourhood and forayed into portions of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu too.

“Many saplings have grown into timber at many places in Bengaluru,’’ she says, proudly. Apart from planting 1000's of saplings at spaces similar to Krishnarajapura, Pai Layout, Begur, Electronics City, Tataguni, Talgatpura, Cambridge Layout, Koramangala, Jakkur Cross and other puts in Bengaluru, Janet has played a key role in planting around five,000 saplings in Tumakuru and Chikaballapur districts.

“We are in a position to plant saplings at any place around the state if there's a request from any person,” she says.

Presently, preparations are being made to plant 1,000 saplings in Coorg and 1,000 coconut saplings in Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu. “Our challenge Thengaja comes to planting 1,000 coconut saplings for delta farmers of Thanjavur suffering from Cyclone Gaja. We are collaborating with Citizens for Awareness, for this challenge.

They have identified 100 deficient families and we will be able to plant 10 coconut saplings for every circle of relatives,’’ says Janet.

Many corporates like KPMG, Sony, Samsung and Nokia, etc., have sponsored the planting of saplings at puts decided on by them. “We get some cash from corporates to plant saplings within the campus or at decided on places. When residents and farmers wish to plant saplings, we do it freed from value,” she says.

However, residents have to arrange the pits to plant the saplings that we provide and promise to look after them. “The function is to make the residents take ownership of the crops. We only plant saplings if the residents guarantee us that they're going to water and take care of them,” says Janet.

In the beginning Janet would purchase saplings with her personal cash but now, as her projects have got larger, she depends upon people’s donations. But there’s extra than simply cash converting arms. “Some people wish to plant saplings on their birthdays or special events. A youngster approaches us yearly to crops 111 saplings on her birthday. This has been taking place for a few years. Her father gives us Rs 300 in keeping with sapling.”

Janet, who crops all kinds of timber like Akash mallige, honge, neem and other varieties, also runs a nursery near the BDA Shopping Complex at Domlur. But it isn't without troubles. “There is not any water provide for the nursery. It is a 80 X 50 website which has been given to me by a patron. I pay no hire but since there's no water I purchase water for the crops. I would love the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities to allocate land for the nursery at a suitable location. Former minister Ramalinga Reddy had directed the BBMP authorities to allot land nevertheless it was not appropriate for a nursery,’’ she says.

As she vegetables the planet one tree at a time, you might want to take a leaf out of Janet’s e book and do the similar.
