100-year-old Swiss locomotive on display at Ooty railway station

Udhagamandalam: A 100-year-old Swiss X-class loco has been dropped at Ooty railway station for show as a heritage decorative piece on Wednesday. It is in a bid to give more enchantment to the heritage railway station, Ooty, consistent with railway officers. The previous loco was once originally a coal-fired and due to this fact in later level converted into oil-fired.

Divisional regional supervisor of Southern Railways (Salem division) Harishankar Varma mentioned, "We have planned many things to make the Ooty railway station beautiful. One among them is the display of the old loco".

The steam loco No.X37386 was once constructed in the 12 months 1918 and was once put into provider on April 10, 1921. The loco was once manufactured via M/s. SLM Winterthur, Switzerland, consistent with Varma.


"The loco was in service between Mettupalayam and Coonoor till May 21, 2016, after which it was withdrawn from service. Now, the loco is refurbished for display," he added.


A singular aggregate of vintage 'pinion and rack' loco and an previous trainer are now under set up within a time of two weeks at Ooty railway station. "A pedestal in a shape of a bridge will be made to install the bogie of the wooden body coach, built in the year 1919 while the body was built in the year 1966. Both were manufactured by M/s. Leeds Forge Co. Ltd. Builders, UK," Varma mentioned.


The trainer with a seating capability of 32 was once also withdrawn from provider in August, 2014. Vintage locomotives have also been displayed at Coonoor, Coimbatore and Salem railway stations via southern railway.
