Assam: 173-year-old church to reopen this week

GUWAHATI: Considered by means of some to be the oldest church within the northeast, the Christ Church nestled within the city's Nehru Park will mark a new beginning on Thursday. The 173-year-old construction has been renovated by means of the church's modest congregation, which cuts across spiritual traces.

The church will open its doorways to the public on Thursday for the first post-restoration service. The first service here used to be held within the 1840s. Pooling in their very own assets, it took the 50 participants of the church the ultimate four-five months to achieve the impossible and make the church regain its former glory. A group of conservationists and designers from the Heritage Conservation Society of Assam (HeCSA) pitched in their support.

"This is a prime example of people cutting across religious lines coming together to salvage a structure which is unique to the skyline of the city. This small building is a reflection of history and a proud depiction of the city's heritage. I feel proud that both Christians and Hindus have come together to restore the church," mentioned Jayanta Sarma of HeCSA.

The church's construction is a mirrored image of early 20th century colonial structure, but in addition draws inspiration from native design.

"Our members pooled in their own resources and made the impossible possible. There was some help from outside the church's congregation as well. We didn't approach the district administration or the state government for help. We kept a donation box. We remained optimistic that the public would come forward," mentioned Reverend Angel Daimari, presbyter of Christ Church.

Christ Church used to be founded in 1844 and consecrated in 1850. The church used to be destroyed two times by means of two tough earthquakes which ravaged the state in the course of the 19th century. The first church development collapsed all through the 1856 earthquake and used to be rebuilt by means of 1861. The second development collapsed all through the earthquake of 1897 and used to be rebuilt by means of 1901. This second development underwent a renovation within the late 1970s.
