ALLAHABAD: The ghats of the Sangam city become alive within the wee hours of Friday as scores of women devotees along with their members of the family arrived at the ghats to finish their rapid. With this, the three days of festivities and rituals, related to Chaath puja, concluded.
These ladies, clad within the attire of newly wed brides, arrived on various ghats of the town and makeshift water our bodies made in several localities at the wee hours of Friday morning. As the primary stroke of solar rays lighted the purple horizon, they introduced Arghya to Sun god.
Thousands of women along with their friends and family and numerous individuals and onlookers, all keen to lend a hand and obtain the blessings of the worshipper, arrived at the ghats and took the holy dip and ended their rapid, which had started since night time of Oct 25.
While people songs, worshipping Chhathi maiya, have been sung at the occasion, the devotees exchanged Prasad. The choices included candies, kheer, thekua and fruit introduced in small bamboo soop.
As the married ladies have been noticed dressed in new brightly coloured saree, the members of the family, especially the girls, too accompanied the households in new attire. Kids have been noticed bursting crackers to rejoice the festival.
Explaining the significance of the festival, a city-based scholar Dr Ram Naresh Tripathi said that ladies and members of the family go back at the ghat for finishing the short early morning and perform Usha Arghya i.e. morning choices. The festival ends with the breaking of the short by the Vratins (a time period used for many who stay rapid) and buddies and kinfolk consult with the homes of the devotees to obtain the prasad.
"Once a family starts performing Chhatt Puja, it is their duty to perform it every year and to pass it on to the following generations. The festival is skipped only if there happens to be a death in the family that year," said Anita Mohito, a neighborhood.
"Although it is tiring, but the pleasure one gets is indescribable as it is not only those who keep fast but the entire family is blessed," said a newly wed Anjali, who had kept the short for the primary time.
