GUWAHATI: An afternoon after the Centre sought the Supreme Court's permission in search of extra time beyond the December 31 deadline to prepare and post the draft of the updated model of National Register of Citizens (NRC) of 1951 for identification of unlawful Bangladeshi settlers here, former chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday accused the BJP governments at the Centre and within the state of purposely delaying the method to proceed with its politics of religion.

Gogoi, who had really useful to the Centre to replace the NRC during his second tenure as the chief minister in 2005, asked Sarbananda Sonowal to step down for failing to turn sincerity in updating the NRC on time. "BJP's first and key promise during its election campaign was to settle the illegal migrants issue once and for all. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had himself promised to make Assam free from illegal Bangladeshi settlers twice - first in the 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign and again in the 2016 assembly election campaign. Sonowal had gone to the NRC office on the first day of his office and today this promise has been tossed into uncertainty. So, Sonowal should step down owning moral responsibility for this," said Gogoi.

The Registrar General of Citizen Registration (RGCR), India, on Thursday filed an interlocutory software within the Supreme Court and sought time until July 31 to post the draft NRC mentioning unfinished work with regards to verification of documents in make stronger of citizenship by means of 1.23 crore candidates and fearing law and order problem. The court is likely to present its choice on Wednesday.

Gogoi said, "This is a tactic of BJP so that it can continue with its politics of religion. BJP doesn't want an error-free NRC so that the foreigners issue remains alive." He added that updating the NRC is the only 'weapon' left to settle the issue.


"From a mass movement, signing an accord, border fencing to foreigner tribunals, we have tried everything. Now, everyone has realized that updating the NRC is the only weapon," he added.


The octogenarian Congress chief said even the previous UPA executive at the Centre didn't appearing any passion in updating the NRC. "The same party was in power both at the Centre and the state but there wasn't an encouraging response from the Centre then. I recommended the updating process despite the fact the it is the responsibility of the central government," added Gogoi.


A pilot mission was launched at Barpeta and Chaygaon in 2010 during Gogoi's term but it surely needed to be suspended following violence leading to deaths of five persons in police firing at Barpeta.
