Less than 1% get 100 days' work under MGNREGS

BHUBANESWAR: There are greater than 62 lakh families in the state registered beneath the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), however not up to one in step with cent, or around 6,000, get the overall quota of 100 days' work.

The job scheme which has been operating in the state since February 2006 provides a guarantee of 100 days of labor in a financial year to rural families.

If the federal government fails to facilitate 100 days of labor to the beneficiaries, they can claim unemployment allowance consistent with norms. So some distance, a total of 62,39,359 families have registered themselves beneath the scheme and feature received job playing cards.

"Odisha is not the only state with such a situation under the MGNREGS. If the beneficiaries cannot get 100 days of work despite demanding for it, they can seek unemployment allowance. But we have not received a single application seeking such allowance," an official of the panchayati raj division said on situation of anonymity.


In 2017-18, the state govt has set a goal to create nine crore guy/days beneath the rural job scheme for which the Centre has agreed to spend Rs 2,798 crore.


"If one person works for a day, it amounts to one man/day. We have, so far, achieved 58 per cent of the target," the official added.
