LIC cautions policyholders against sharing Aadhaar via SMS

NEW DELHI: State-owned LIC has cautioned policyholders against sharing their Aadhaar quantity thru SMS, announcing it has no longer operationalised this type of facility to link the original identification quantity with policies.

"Our attention is drawn to some messages circulated in social media with our emblem and logo asking policyholders to link their Aadhaar number by sending SMS to designated number," Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) said in a public realize.

The country's biggest insurance company further said that "no such message" has been sent via LIC.


"Also no facility to link Aadhaar number to policies is available through SMS in LIC," it said.


The realize further added that as and when LIC will allow linking of Aadhaar quantity with policies thru SMS, its website online will likely be duly up to date of this selection.


Regulator Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA) has said linkage of Aadhaar quantity with insurance policies is obligatory.


It has requested insurers to agree to the statutory norms.
