Row at Idgah Maidan as cops evict farmers selling flowers

Hubballi: Tension prevailed for some time at Idgah Maidan right here on Tuesday when police attempted to stop farmers from promoting flowers and end result on 'Tulasi Lagna'.

Angry farmers were given into an argument with police and demanded that they be allowed to sell their produce on the spot. However, police didn't give heed to their request and endured to vacate the farmers from the place. Angry farmers then went on a flash strike. Sensing a bother, more police workforce rushed to the spot.

Meanwhile, BJP staff, who have been on their Sadbhavana Yatra, interfered and convinced police to allow farmers to sell their produce. After heated arguments, police allowed them to carry out their industry through 8am. However, M P Sarvagol, inspector, Suburban police station, mentioned it used to be a minor incident and no case used to be registered.


Earlier, taxies used to look ahead to customers at Idgah Maidan. During fairs, farmers from villages like Gopanakoppa, Gabbur, Sulla, Byahatti, Kusugal, Bhandiwad, Noolvi and Mishrikoti used to sell flowers and end result all through fairs like Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, Ugadi, Rama Navami, Krishna Janmashtami and Tulsi Lagna.


When HDMC started renovation work, taxies have been vacated and barred the entry of public to the bottom.


Idgah maidan used to be the only place for farmers of surrounding villages to sell their end result, and flowers and different seasonal produces through the years. Argument between police and farmers has been a quite common nowadays when police try to limit farmers from using this place for promoting their produces.
