BHUBANESWAR: Chairman of University Grant Commission (UGC) Virander Singh Chauhan asked the state government to provide more price range to state universities to improve the standard of training.
"State universities are famously under-funded. If we want to improve the quality of education then we have to figure out at the national level that the state universities need much more funding and much more nurture. All state universities need to be funded more," said Chauhan. He was once speaking at the 75th foundation day of Utkal University, the premier college of the state.
Chauhan said, UGC has been giving grants to institutes each non-public and government which can be eligible for availing grants below the 12 (B) provision of the UGC. None of the technical schools affiliated to the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) are disadvantaged of the UGC grants below 12 (B) because of lack of everlasting affiliation.
"UGC has no role to play in this as it is the responsibility of the affiliating university to ensure these colleges can avail UGC grants," Chauhan added.
He also emphasized on NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) accreditation for all upper training institute, which has been made obligatory to avail grants from the UGC.
Underlining the desire for excellent score for universities, Governor and chancellor SC Jamir said, "Research accounts for a significant part of the scoring in the international rankings of universities. Having good rankings is not a bad thing for students at all, as they will be better regarded when seeking employment in the marketplace after completion of studies. Good rankings also help attract diverse talent to our universities."
He additional said, the next priority ahead of the college is to make stronger employability potentialities of our early life. "Basic skills such as in communication and critical thinking, as well as work ethics of students must also be emphasized, thus increasing their employability," Jamir pointed out.
The college proposed to set up a world hostel and a Platinum Jubilee Auditorium within the campus.
