Cuttack TB patient given ‘expired’ drugs dies, govt orders investigation

BHUBANESWAR: A 20-year-old girl from Cuttack who used to be allegedly administered expired medicines for the past a number of months as a part of the treatment for tuberculosis, (TB) died in SCB Medical College and Hospital on Sunday. The state govt ordered a probe into her dying. Gudi Nayak, a local of Rajabagicha in Cuttack, have been taking the governmentsupplied loose TB medicines from City Hospital. "The fact that the medicines had expired was discovered when she consulted a private practitioner recently because her health kept deteriorating," Gudi's father Rajendra Naik mentioned. She used to be shifted to SCB on Friday. Both of Gudi's parents are sweepers and are unlettered.

Rajendra mentioned the local Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) employee would convey the TB medicines for his daughter from City Hospital, as is the norm. "Being unable to read and write, we could not understand if the medicines were valid," he mentioned.


Director (health services and products) Braja Kishore Brahma mentioned an inquiry would be conducted via a senior officer to determine the reason for Gudi's dying. The state TB officer, Sanjukta Sahoo, will habits the probe, he informed TOI.
