Odisha Prisons to open fuel stations, employ lifers

BHUBANESWAR: Taking a cue from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments, the Odisha prisons directorate is making plans to open petrol bunks on its lands and employ convicts, serving existence imprisonment. An offer on this regard was once recently despatched to the state govt for approval.
"We were impressed by the successful experiments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and have sent a similar proposal to our government. This is part of the reform and correctional measures for jail inmates," additional director basic of police (prisons) Binyanand Jha told TOI.

As in keeping with the plan, gas filling stations might be opened adjoining different jails (on jail land), having most number of lifer convicts. Only the ones, serving existence imprisonment with good attitude, might be employed to run the petrol pumps. "Once the government approves our proposal, we will start a survey to choose the right candidates. We also need to choose some educated lifers, who can smoothly manage the fuel filling stations," Jha stated. The prisons directorate has proposed to open gas stations close to Jamujhari outdoor jail on Bhubaneswar outskirts and in Cuttack, Berhampur and Sambalpur districts.


Sources stated two oil PSUs already started the groundwork after being invited through the prisons wing. "We asked them to select the sites and explore the feasibility of smooth business. Initially, petrol pumps can be opened on jail lands that can fetch good revenue. Later, we can engage our convicts to run those units," some other jail legitimate stated.


The officers dispelled apprehension of conceivable get away through the convicts from workplace. "We, at present, allow convicts of Jamujhari open air jail to move outside. Last year, the state govt licensed premature release of 33 convicts from different jails after remission in their existence sentence.
