Odisha records growth in foreign tourist arrivals in 2017

BHUBANESWAR: The state tourism division said foreign vacationer arrivals (FTA) in Odisha greater in 2017, compared to the previous year. According to the data available with the tourism division, overall 84,658 foreigners visited the state until November 2017. Altogether 76,361 foreign vacationers had visited the state in 2016.
"We are giving finishing touch to the December's data. But the FTA last year (till November) already crossed the 2016 figure. We expect that the foreign tourist arrival status will cross one lakh by the time we add the December's data," tourism director Nitin Jawale informed TOI. Jawale said November-December was once a height vacationer season and a lot of foreigners had thronged the state. In November on my own, overall 13,473 foreigners visited the state.


Department officers said foreign tourism were given a boost due to some global sporting events, organised right here ultimate year. "We witnessed huge footfall of foreigners (players, their management officials, families and supporters) during the Asian Athletic in July and World Hockey League in December last year. The government had conducted massive promotional activities to promote Odisha," another tourism reputable said.


Earning of the state tourism division too recorded a boost. Sources said the state govt earned nearly Rs 388.05 crore ultimate year (until November) from the expenditure of the foreign vacationers. In 2016, incomes from the FTA was once nearly Rs 350 crore.


The Odisha Tourism had drawn flak for drastic fall within the arrival of foreign vacationers to the state in 2015 in spite of spending huge funds in infrastructure development and promotional campaigns within the run-up to mega Nabakalebara competition of Lord Jagannath. In 2015, overall 66,971 foreigners visited the state as compared to 71,426 in 2014.


Jawale said Odisha continues to be a safe haven for foreigners. Latest data of national crime records bureau (NCRB) revealed that the state nearly recorded no crime in opposition to foreigners. According to the NCRB record, only four instances of crime in opposition to foreigners have been reported within the state between 2014 and 2016. Though the NCRB record did not specify the character of the four offences, police said those have been petty theft instances. While only one offence was once dedicated in opposition to a foreigner in 2014, two instances have been reported in 2015 and one in 2016, the NCRB statistics said. Police said the four instances in three years have been reported in Puri district.
