BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) on Tuesday slapped a high-quality (environmental reimbursement) of Rs 25,000 on Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for open burning of municipal solid waste at the designated sell off backyard at Bhuasuni near Daruthenga village on the outskirt of town.
On the root of a grievance by means of locals, the OSPCB officers inspected the website online and found huge fireplace at the sell off website online.
"Although the cause of the fire is yet to be known, it is the responsibility of the BMC to ensure that the waste are not burnt in open. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had clearly prohibited open burning of the waste," said OSPCB regional officer (Bhubaneswar) Hadibandhu Panigrahi.
The air pollution board issued a notice to the BMC commissioner Krishan Kumar and requested him to stop open burning straight away. "BMC is having the sole responsibility for such illegal activity. You are directed to stop open burning and file compliance report," said the OSPCB letter to the BMC commissioner.
OSPCB officers said open burning of solid waste which is on this case is fixed with piles of polythene, depart dioxin and furan as well as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, which might be dangerous if blended with ambient air.
The BMC has been dumping municipal solid waste at Daruthenga, a village which is not underneath BMC. Around 500 metric tonne of garbage is dumped each day. The waste dumping has been antagonistic by means of the villagers, who have moved the NGT towards BMC.
BMC officers said they sent two fireplace engines to the website online to douse the flames. "Fire engines were pressed into extinguishing the fire. Since smoke was billowing out of the dump, the firemen may need at least five hours to completely douse the flames," said a BMC officer.
BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation) Lalatendu Sahu said the fireplace might be unintended. "We are not able to landfill the waste as the matter is currently in the court (sub-judice). We have also geared up plans for segregation of waste so as to avoid mixing with other household waste," he instructed TOI. He added that they might read about the high-quality imposed on BMC and record a compliance document.
