Vijayapura: A big crowd was looking ahead to the coming of AICC president Rahul Gandhi hours ahead of his roadshow began on Saturday night.
The main street from Gandhi Chowk to Inspection Bungalow was blocked by police body of workers, 3 hours ahead of the rally. Barricades were placed at necessary junctions and as many as a dozen roads connecting to the main street were blocked.
Rahul Gandhi in conjunction with other Congress leaders arrived at Godawari Hotel Circle in a distinct bus at 6.20pm. He disembarked and waved at the crowd ahead of shaking fingers with a few of them. Some fans even showered flora on him. Rahul stood at the go out of the bus during the 40-minute roadshow until Gandhi Chowk. The entire stretch was covered with Congress flags, banners and buntings.
KPCC president Dr G Parameshwara, chief minister Siddaramaiah, energy minister D Okay Shivakumar, water sources minister M B Patil, Nagathan MLA Raju Algur and city MLA Dr Mukbul Bagwan accompanied their chief.
Uses Kannada words
In his speech at Gandhi chowk, Rahul uttered a few Kannada words, similar to ‘Chennagiddira?, Aramagiddira? ‘Nudidante Nade’. Rahul said that the Congress was following the teachings of 12th century social reformer Basavanna and appealed to the electorate to lend a hand the party regain its energy in the state and Centre.
Rahul Gandhi, who stayed at Circuit House here on Saturday night, was served traditional South Indian and Continental meals. Kolhapuri, Maratha (highly spiced) taste meals pieces and traditional North Karnataka meals were also ready. On the right way to Vijayapura, Rahul Gandhi was welcomed by Lambani girls with a standard dance and track in entrance of Al-Ameen Medical College.
Some miscreants allegedly set fireplace to timber on either side of the Athani-Vijayapur Road on which the convoy of Rahul Gandhi was expected to transport. Police doused the fire.
