Clash between workers stalls Bogibeel bridge construction

Dibrugarh: Construction work at the Bogibeel bridge over river Brahmaputra has been paralyzed since Wednesday owing to a conflict that broke out between two teams of shrunk employees over allotment of duties.

Sources said two teams of employees under two contractors have been engaged within the superstructure work of the four.94-km bridge. While one group was engaged for work at the river's north financial institution (Dhemaji facet), the opposite group was engaged within the south financial institution (Dibrugarh facet). A dispute arose after employees from the north financial institution reportedly performed construction actions at the other facet, violating an previous settlement.


"There was a mutual understanding between the two contractors that each party will do the concreting work on 20 upper deck slabs each on the bridge superstructure. But the north bank contractor disregarded the agreement and went on to complete concreting work of 30 deck slabs. On Wednesday morning, a clash broke out between the two parties," a railway reputable said.


Meanwhile, the railway authority has reported the subject to the Dibrugarh district administration, the Union minister of state for railways as well as the state government. Dibrugarh SP Gautam Borah, in conjunction with other district officers, went to the web page of the bridge on Thursday and held a dialogue with the employees.


The Bogibeel bridge, which has been projected as India's longest rail-cum-road bridge, is anticipated to be commissioned in October 2018.
