‘Design not reserved for elite, but a tool for social empowerment’

Coimbatore: Design is not just for the elite, neither is it fashion, however a device for social empowerment, inclusiveness, dignity and safety, director of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Pradyumna Vyas, mentioned right here on Friday.
“Design is very important for each social and economic construction. The trade has realised it now and is focusing more on design,” mentioned Vyas, who used to be in the city to participate in ‘India Design Mark 2018 and Good Design Seminar’ held on the PSG Institute of Management.

While about 1.6 million engineers and management students graduate every year, simplest 10,000 students graduate from design faculties, Vyas mentioned. “There is a huge gap there,” he informed TOI.

“India has realised the importance of design very past due. Though we now have had a strong aesthetic sensibility in our arts and crafts, we came past due to the theory of design in industrial merchandise as ours used to be a closed economic system until the 90s,” he mentioned.

Vyas mentioned all merchandise should be designed taking cognisance of the user, producer, generation and surroundings. “A good design should not use much power and should not purpose much pollution. The thought of minimalism should be integrated in usage of sources, to make the design sustainable,” he mentioned.

There should be a contextual adaptation of generation and design. “For example the theory of automation and Industry four.zero might eliminate a number of jobs. So, in our context, we have to look into how we will create jobs using the similar generation,” he mentioned.

India Design Mark, or I Mark, is a popularity of excellent design product, given by means of the India Design Council. The council used to be arrange in 2009, to create consciousness about design, in line with the recommendation of the National Design Policy framed in 2007.


For the last six years, the council has been recognising merchandise with good design with ‘I Mark’, mentioned Vyas. “So a long way 309 merchandise had been recognised. In the present year, we now have recognised 69 more merchandise. For this, the council has been collaborating with the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, which recognises good design product with ‘G Mark’ or good design mark,” he mentioned.


Speakers on the seminar discussed rising ideas in design akin to inclusive design and design in motion.


Products ranging from furniture to industrial equipment were exhibited to be assessed for ‘I Mark’ as a part of the development.
