International Women's Day 2018: Pink Auto initiative shows way, makes travelling safer

BONGAIGAON: In the economic hub of Bongaigaon, a gaggle of 13 lady is ushering in a change. These ladies have introduced auto services across the the city, providing protected delivery choices for women.

Pink Auto, the first such initiative within the northeast, is the brainchild of social worker Kusumbar Choudhury, who may be the Bongaigaon city challenge supervisor of the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM). It used to be officially introduced in January this yr. Choudhury stated that the challenge can be termed as a luck. "Now, besides providing safety and security to the women passengers in the town, these women have also set an example of a dignified living," he added. Choudhury got here up with the idea that after a lady passenger confronted harassment while travelling by myself within the the city.

For all these ladies, widowed or separated from their husbands, this may be a means to claim their financial independence. "It's great to be doing this work. It has given us a better platform to earn a dignified life. Our earnings have increased. I'm happier to bear the expenses of my household and save something for my daughter," Saraswati Sahoo, a widow and one of the ladies auto drivers, informed TOI.

Sahoo lives along with her daughter and her husband's circle of relatives in Bongaigaon the city. She would earn little or no and barely make ends meet. "Now, I earn around Rs 600 or more in a day," she says.

Though those ladies had been doing their new activity with pleasure, they have to overcome a lot of demanding situations, including disparaging words from their male opposite numbers. However, they have now not allowed that to get in the way. "Very often, our male counterparts would discourage us. But we have accepted the challenge. I tell them we are doing our work," says Sahoo, giggling off the hostility she faces on a daily basis.
