Another storm brushes past, Kolkata gets drizzle

KOLKATA: A thunderstorm hit portions of south Kolkata and brushed previous the remainder of town on Saturday night. It was once accompanied through gusty winds, which touched a maximum speed of 52km an hour and an 18km-tall column of cumulonimbus cloud which shrouded town in darkness. Though the cloud cover and the wind appeared threatening, what adopted was once just a mild drizzle in some portions of town.

The large cloud column, which had sailed against Kolkata from Baripada in Odisha reducing across West Midnapore, East Midnapore, Howrah, and North and South 24 Parganas, brushed previous the southern fringes of town and moved against the Bay of Bengal, in step with the Met place of job. But the stipulations that had ended in the formation of the cloud and the thunderstorm still persist and may just result in some other thunderstorm on Sunday, said the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Alipore.

Even even though the thunderstorm hit with a wind speed of 52 km/hr, it wasn’t a squall, explained weathermen. Neither did it remaining the necessary one minute nor did the wind speed succeed in its top in a gentle ascent. “It was once a surprising gust which lashed Kolkata after which stopped. But the stipulations remain conducive for some other thunderstorm on Sunday,” said GK Das, director of RMC.

Conditions have been turning favourable for a thunderstorm since Wednesday. Moisture incursion from the ocean was once coupled with a cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand. On Saturday, a strong wind from the outside (wind seer) swirled up to the upper layers. “All these stipulations have been superb for the increase of a thunderstorm. Unfortunately for Kolkata, it grazed the southern a part of town. The exceptionally tall cloud column was once shaped due to the high vertical wind speed from the outside,” explained Das. But it began dissipating once it crossed Kolkata and moved against the ocean.

“Cool winds from the ocean help to disintegrate such clouds,” Das added. The town is but to be lashed through a correct nor’wester this season. It has had no less than 3 near-misses. Last Sunday’s thunderstorm was once not a squall both because it had a lower wind speed. But stipulations for a nor’wester are increase. When an area has wet, warm stipulations and some other turns dry and scorching, nor’westers occur. On Saturday, too, south Bengal and the Jharkhand region had identical stipulations that ended in the thunderstorm,” said Das.
