Agricultural University drone to monitor crops, soil condition

COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has purchased a drone to monitor soil moisture and the well being of crops.
The plan to use drones to inspect and assess crops and soil was floated closing September. An ordeal was conducted on Wednesday, TNAU sources said.

The drone has two cameras – multispectral digital camera and thermal vision digital camera. “The multispectral digital camera would paintings in five color bands and can be used to monitor the well being of crops, whilst the thermal vision digital camera can be used to monitor soil moisture,” a TNAU authentic said. The cameras can be used to monitor any crops.

The university had been using satellite images to monitor and assess crops. But, the images are not efficient when there's cloud duvet. “In such scenarios, drones come in handy as they can be made to fly in decrease altitudes,” the authentic said.

“Also, satellite images can also be accessed simplest each 10 to 12 days, however drones can be used when a necessity arises. They would also give clear visibility of crops,” he advised TOI.


While the drone can also be operated at a most top of 1km, they might optimally operate it at a top of 400m, a professor said. “The drone has an working vary of 10km and the run time is 30 to 40 mins. After that, it’s battery needed to be re-equipped,” he said.


“We would use the drone in accordance with necessity. If there is a calamity in a village, we'd use it to evaluate the rapid losses. It would basically be used for scientific purposes,” the professor added


The university would get started using the drone real-time in two weeks.
