MYSURU: The anthrax scare has come back to haunt the wild animals of Bandipur Tiger Reserve this summer time. At least ten heads of cattle died because of this disease at Shivapura village over the last two weeks.
This small village in Gundlupet taluk, 8km from Melkammanahalli on the entrance to Bandipura Tiger Reserve, has precipitated panic among villagers and natural world activists because the disease can infect people in addition to mammals.
In 2013, there used to be panic among woodland officials after the dying of cattle at the woodland fringes because of anthrax. Even regardless that the disease did not declare any natural world that yr, in 2004, elephants had died at Nagarahole Tiger Reserve and in Sathyamangalam woodland bordering the BRT tiger reserve.
The disease used to be first noticed after two heads of cattle belonging to Lokesh and one each of Shivamma and Subbappa died within the village. Later, six heads of cattle belonging to villagers DC Madappa, Prema, Siddaraju, Papa Shetty and Chinnabasappa died up to now week. There used to be one dying on Monday too. All the cattle have been cross-breeds. A few died in neighbouring Hundipura village.
After the disease used to be detected, well being and animal husbandry department officials began vaccination. Gundlupet executive veterinary officer Dr Mallesh stated because of drought over the last few years,the disease has spread. “Villagers can have buried dead animals close to the lakes. As there used to be rain over the last few days, bacterial spores within the soil can have spread with rain water. As cattle graze close to the lake, the disease spread,” he stated.
