BU seeks nod from UGC to run distance education courses

COIMBATORE: Bharathiar University has sought approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to provide distance studying programmes.
The UGC had in March referred to as for online applications from eligible higher tutorial institutions for providing open and distance studying courses for the educational yr starting July 2018.

Though the university had applied ultimate yr, it was once no longer accorded approval.

“When we applied ultimate yr, it was once no longer processed online. Several other schools had confronted the same issue. So, we applied for providing open and distance studying courses this yr and it has been permitted online,” mentioned registrar incharge of the university, B Vanitha.

In another conversation, the UGC mentioned the degrees acquired via distance studying had been on a par with the ones acquired via a formal path. But it mentioned institutions cannot run distance studying courses in fields such as engineering, drugs, nursing, pharmacy, structure and physiotherapy.

“We will convene a meeting and decide at the courses that may be introduced via distance studying,” the registrar mentioned.
