Green steps: BMC goes extra mile on plastic ban

MUMBAI: The BMC has over the past month accumulated greater than 2,300 kg of banned plastic at dedicated boxes placed at various spots for the ease of the public. The BMC also accumulated about 47,600 kg more of dry waste than usual, some of it plastic, at waste segregation centres at the native ward level.
Municipal officers stated the public reaction to their attraction to deposit plastic with the BMC was once deficient. The state government ban on an unlimited vary of plastic products, together with lift baggage, kicked in on March 23 and other people have time until June 23 to eliminate these.

The BMC has now activated a dedicated a toll-free quantity, 1800222357, on which individuals can call municipal personnel to assemble the plastic in their possession. It is also starting an awareness marketing campaign from subsequent week to urge other people to not use plastic and to deposit it with the municipality.

“Societies and industry institutions wish to acquire the banned plastic on their premises and provides a decision on the equipped quantity,” assistant municipal commissioner Kiran Dighavkar stated. “Our workforce will consult with them to assemble the plastics from them.”

After the government ban announcement, the BMC planted plastic collection boxes in high footfall spaces, basically large markets. At many places, shopkeepers and others dumped all varieties of non-plastic waste in these.

The BMC is but to finalise an agency to recycle the accumulated plastic. Municipal officers stated they were looking to 0 in on recyclers registered with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).


Officials stated that a couple of chilly drink and bottled water producer came ahead appearing their passion for the work.


There isn't any plastic recycling centre within the city. Before now, ragpicker would segregate the plastic at BMC rubbish collection centres in various parts of the city and promote it to scrap sellers. The sellers would promote it to various plastic recyclers, many of whom have their vegetation in Gujarat. There are 4 recyclers in Pune and its neighbourhood.


The BMC has also decided to post the names of its officers in conjunction with the spaces assigned to them for inspection whilst implementing the plastic ban after June 23.
