Locals unite to revive dried up ponds

ALLAHABAD: Seeking to provide a brand new rent of life to unnoticed and abandoned ponds in the area, a gaggle of villagers have taken up the mantle of reviving ponds in Soraon, Holagarh and Shankargarh blocks of Allahabad and Mandhata block of Pratapgarh district before the arriving of monsoon.
The villagers, below the banner of Jal Jan Vikias Abhiyan, have introduced an consciousness marketing campaign for 'shram daan' to encourage others to enroll in their force.

Convener of Jal Jan Vikas Abhiyan, Samaj Shekhar, said, "Our focus is on restructuring over 50 abandoned ponds and to fill them with rain water."

The villagers are organising chaupals to collect toughen for the motive.


"Rain water would go to waste if it is not stored properly. We have coordinated with villagers to dig small drains to collect rain water into a pond. We are also trying to dig ponds with more depth."


Shekhar added that over 30 and 20 villages from Allahabad and Pratapgarh respectively had been selected for restoration and the workout can be finished by means of June end.


"The villagers have too made up their mind to restore all natural resources of water in the region, and for that they would organise a drive to clean up ancient ponds with the help of local administration, May 5 onwards."


Tehlsidar of Bara area, Arvind Kumar Mishra, said "Once we are able to collect rain water, it would surely check the depleting status of ground water and farmers would also be getting adequate water for irrigation of crops."
