HYDERABAD: Nipah virus, a brain-damaging virus, killed a minimum of 11 folks in Kerala, but health professionals and chiropterologists fluctuate at the function of bats in spreading of the fatal virus. India’s outstanding bat biologist, Dr Ch Srinivasulu of Osmania University, said fruit bat is a number to Nipah virus, but function of fruit bats in the spread of disease has been exaggerated.
Dr Srinivasulu instructed TOI: “Usually, most of the zoonotic illnesses are transmitted through a bite through animals to the first person who will get infected. There is a large number of adverse propaganda declaring that bats are chargeable for Nipah virus deaths. Unless scientifically proven as to how the first infection took place, it is untimely to conclude that it is being spread through fruit bats. During Ebola outbreak, bats had been blamed but later it used to be discovered that chimpanzees and gorillas which got infected played a task. The video amassed from a Kerala well, a habitat of bats, shows that it's not the large fruit bat (Pteropus giganteus). It seems like a small bat.”
He added, “Several tribals eat bats everywhere India. But there aren't any instances of them getting infected with the fatal disease. Due to lack of habitat and pressure elements on atmosphere, bats are dropping immunity as a result of which the virus is leaping out of the host. Instead of creating panic, issues about their conservation and fending off battle with people should be addressed. In Hyderabad, there are six to seven colonies of fruit bats just about human habitations.”
