Sr citizens get crash course on smartphone use

CHENNAI: The lecture room you stroll into isn't like any that you have ever observed. The instructor seems on indulgently as everyone peers into their cell phones. And each scholar within the room is definitely over 60.

HelpAge India’s four-day direction for senior electorate on ‘How To Use Smart Phones’ is in growth at Nimmadhi War Widows Welfare Association in R A Puram, and 35 keen students have signed up. Eight-two-year-old Padma Sudarshan, for example, has come armed together with her daughter’s smartphone. “Once I learn to use it, I'm going to shop for my own device,” says Padma, who's more all in favour of learning how to use Ola and What’sApp. “I like to move far and wide on my own and it's going to be easier after I discover ways to use an app to e-book an auto or cab,” says bright-eyed Padma, who has a zeal for mastering all issues new, having were given a PhD at 70 and authored a e-book at 80.

With an app for the whole thing, many senior electorate are now keen on learning to use a smartphone. HelpAge has been undertaking classes in Anna Nagar each month for the remaining one-and-a-half years as well as in Naganallur. For the remaining three months, they have got been undertaking the direction in Nimmadhi as neatly, with the existing batch starting on Tuesday.

“The first day we educate them basic items akin to how to transfer their phone off and on, send a text message and many others,” says Muthukrishnan. The 2d day covers how to use apps akin to WhatsApp, Ola, Uber, and online buying groceries apps, while the 3rd day covers cellular wallets, online banking and many others. The ultimate day, seniors are taught how to make application invoice payments.


On Wednesday morning, Muthukrishnan is busy explaining how to use the app store/ play store. “It’s a shop, like Saravana Stores,” he says, demonstrating how to faucet on icons to get more information about each and every app and the ranking. “The ranking presentations you ways good it's. Download most effective the ones you need and most effective the ones which can be free,” he warns.


Most other people, like Natarajan Jayaraman, 78, are all in favour of learning how to use Ola, PayTM, and WhatsApp. “Smartphones are now a part of lifestyles and make it easier. And I additionally need to listen to track on my phone,” he says, as he sits within the entrance row, gripping the device he were given just four days ago.


The savvier ones have come to replace their wisdom. “I have been the use of it for the previous five years,” says 68-year-old V Krishnamurthy, whose remaining activity was educating house engineering at a school. “But there must be numerous options It's not that i am aware of and I need to use it absolutely.”
