Partialy blind dog deployed at Metro station

MUMBAI: Mumbai's Animal Welfare Officer (AWO) Bimlesh Navani was surprised to peer a in part blind canine being deployed for safety by a non-public company at the Versova Metro station in suburban Mumbai on Wednesday.
Navani then in an instant informed the Mumbai Police and likewise directed the canine's handlers to get the canine medically treated at the Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (BSPCA), since utilising an sick animal as a guard canine quantities to animal cruelty.


"When I further inquired with the security firm, I came to know that the Labrador is named Marshal, and it is suffering from cataract in the left eye. It also had many ticks inside his ears, and so was continuously scratching itself. I first called up the local police to inform them about this case, and later told the dog's handlers to give proper medical treatment to it. It was just not fit enough to be assigned as guard dog's work at the busy metro station," stated Navani.


"I have categorically told the security firm that they should show me the progress report with regards to Marshal's health, or else I will slap a police case of animal cruelty against them. They said that they will comply," Navani added.


The safety company confident Bimlesh that Marshal's clinical remedy will start at the earliest at BSPCA in Parel.


The secretary of BSPCA, Lt Colonel JC Khanna, told TOI: "We are ready to treat the dog whenever it is brought here. I have seen that some of the private security firms employ rather old dogs at malls, hotels and other public places for security. However, a guard dog must be fully fit and healthy. Hence, any dog suffering from a serious ailment like cataract should never be used as a guard dog."
