SEC has no idea about poll security

KOLKATA: The state election fee hasn’t yet been able to draw up a security plan for the Bengal panchayat polls, as the state govt hasn’t given it a clear image about the availability of forces from outside the state. The poll panel now has simply three days to stay the May four deadline set via Calcutta High Court for submitting a “concrete safety plan”.
The single-phase rural polls is scheduled for May 14, which is solely two weeks away. Providing good enough safety — a minimum of one armed workforce for each of the 58,467 booths — has been a fear, as the state has simply 58,000 men at hand, of whom simply 46,000 are armed police officers, the rest lathi-wielding.

SEC resources hinted that state representatives present within the assembly with the election commissioner at his place of job on Monday could simplest report that three of the 4 states the federal government had written to for forces had responded “undoubtedly”, but had been yet to confirm the number of forces they'd send.

From what state representatives (house secretary Atri Bhattacharya, director general of police Surajit Kar Purakayastha and ADG (regulation and order) Anuj Sharma) told commissioner Amarendra Singh within the assembly, apparently the fee can’t supply one armed workforce for each booth. Security all the way through the rural polls is the high concern of the opposition, which has already moved courtroom in the hunt for its intervention. The commissioner on Monday apprised the state representatives the concerns raised via the opposition representatives he met on Saturday.

“Holding of elections can’t be in line with assumptions and probability but at the concrete number of forces available with the state govt,” mentioned CPM leader Rabin Deb. West Bengal Congress president Adhir Chowdhury mentioned the state govt and its “stooge” poll panel had been now into back-calculation. “They have mounted the number of uncontested seats ahead of the polls. Now they are back to their drawing forums to fix the number of forces when the process will have to were the opposite direction round,” Chowdhury mentioned. PDS state secretary Samir Putatunda mentioned: “It would were simple for the state to write down to the Centre as a substitute of approaching 4 to five states for added forces. We have made the Centre a celebration to our petition in courtroom.”

Since April 2, when applicants had been asked to report nominations, the state has witnessed violence within the districts, already claiming six lives. Opposition parties worry the placement could worsen on poll day with out safety.

CPM and PDS on Monday couldn’t transfer their petitions urging the prime courtroom to stall the election procedure with out good enough forces because Justice Subrata Talukdar used to be absent. The department bench of Justice Biswanath Samadder and Justice Arindam Mukherjee took up two appeal petitions — one via Congress and the opposite via CPM — but adjourned the listening to as CPM legal professional Bikash Bhattacharyya and SEC legal professional Sakti Mukherjee couldn’t produce the vakalatnama (the customer’s popularity of taking the transient).
