Shoplifting: 59-yr-old holidayer stuck in Turkey

MUMBAI: A 59-year-old boutique proprietor from Mulund is stuck in a Turkey hotel for 12 days as an area court docket has refused to let her fly out till trial for an alleged shoplifting.
Renu Narula had long past on a holiday to Europe along with her buddies when she used to be accused of shoplifting a couple of sunglasses from a store on the Istanbul airport—a rate she refutes. Speaking to TOI from Istanbul, Narula, a widow, stated she is devastated. “There is no clarity how lengthy I am expected to stick here. My 94-year-old better half's father, who I have been taking good care of, is on my own in India. My price range are getting tired,” she stated.


Narula had travelled to Europe with a bunch of 18 buddies. She had deliberate to perform a little sightseeing on her personal before getting directly to a cruise. On April 20, she checked in her baggage on the Istanbul airport to leave for Athens. “My buddies and I have been buying groceries in the duty-free phase and entered an equipment retailer. Suddenly, some employees from the equipment retailer barged into the cafe and grabbed my bag. They accused me of shoplifting a couple of sunglasses and took my bag with them to the store. I adopted them as my passport, money and tickets have been in the bag,” she stated.


The retailer employees took out a shades case from her bag. It had two used shades in it. “I advised them they have been my shades and there used to be no query of creating fee for them. They threatened that I might be in giant hassle. When they announced they have been going to call the police, I stated I had no objection. I knew I used to be blameless and had not anything to be fearful of,” she added. When the police officers arrived with an interpreter, the store displayed their CCTV footage. “On digicam, I may well be seen making an attempt on some shades and putting them again. A few mins later, the footage confirmed me hanging a piece of paper in my purse. It used to be a paper serviette however the employees claimed it used to be a label from a couple of sunglasses. They had no footage taking pictures the alleged shoplifting,” Narula added.


She used to be taken to the police station and then to a court docket while her buddies left for Greece. “The police suggested I rent a legal professional which I did however she didn't discuss English.
