Silchar to be developed as Act East city, transport hub

SILCHAR: The state executive plans on growing Silchar as one of the most 'Act East towns' and as a counter-magnet space to Guwahati. Besides decongesting Guwahati, the plan will also challenge Silchar at the forefront of the rising economic family members of the northeast with Bangladesh and Asean international locations, thru Myanmar, underneath the Centre's Act East Policy.
"Following a query sent to the Centre by a Silchar-based organisation, Dr Shyama Prasad Mookherjee Memorial Swartha Suraksha Parishad, Silchar will be developed as the second logistics hub in the northeast region, after Jogighopa (in Bongaigaon district)," Sazzad Alam, deputy secretary on the state executive's Act East Policy affairs department, said.

The plan is to broaden Silchar as a regional connectivity hub - by means of roads, railway, riverway and airway.

It can be related with the Asian trilateral highway node at Moreh in Manipur during the parkway by means of Imphal, Jiribam and Lakhipur. As the japanese terminal of the East-Wesi corridor, it's going to even be connected to the Guwahati-Shillong-Dawki border-Chittagong parkway by means of the Jowai-Ladrumbai-Sonapur-Kalain corridor. It can be related with Sylhet and Bangladesh to Kolkata by means of the Mainland India-Bangladesh-Northeast India (MI-B-NEI) Corridor. Through Katigora and Karimganj, it's going to be connected to Agartala and to Kolkata thru Bangladesh by means of the MI-B-NEI Corridor II.

To enhance railway connectivity, broad-gauge rail lines have already been extended to Silchar from Lumding at the Guwahati-Dibrugarh line. The line can be related to Bangladesh during the Agartala-Akhaura line, which is to be commissioned quickly. Concept notes have additionally been prepared for restoring the ancient rail linkage with Bangladesh thru Karimganj and Mauvibazar, that used to hold items from Assam to Chittagong Port. Railway connectivity can be established to the border town of Moreh from Silchar thru Lakhipur and Imphal.

For riverine connectivity, the Silchar river port at the Barak river has been proposed. It can be related to the Chittagong and Mongla ports of Bangladesh with the Kolkata port during the Barak, Surma, Kushiara, Meghna, Padma and Hooghly rivers, and the Bay of Bengal.

Silchar airport at Kumbhirgram goes to be expanded quickly right into a regional air hub. Besides, a brand new airport for Silchar could also be at the cards.
