Sipcot units polluting water bodies, say Erode residents

ERODE: Farmers and the citizens of Perundurai on Tuesday petitioned the district administration in the hunt for action in opposition to the leather-based processing, tyre retreading, dyeing and chemical devices on the Sipcot industrial park for allegedly discharging untreated effluents into open pits or within sight water our bodies.
Pointing out that it was once necessary for such devices to have effluent treatment plant on their premises, C Velusamy, a resident, said, “But, none have such treatment plants on the industrial park set up by way of the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Sipcot) at Perundurai. They are simply discharging untreated effluents without delay into the water our bodies.”

The citizens lamented that water our bodies and groundwater had been being polluted as a result of this and urged the officials attached to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to take steps to find a way to the issue on the earliest.

“The general dissolved solids (TDS) degree within the water our bodies across the Sipcot industrial park is likely to pass 10,000 quickly,” said B S Balakrishnan, some other resident. “Water might be are compatible for consuming provided that TDS degree is lower than 400,” he noted.

District collector S Prabhakar won the petition and assured the citizens that he would look into this issue on the earliest.

Meanwhile, the citizens threatened to take out an indefinite protest if the TNPCB officials and the district administration had been to fail to take movements in opposition to the erring devices.
