Smoke from compost plant irks HSR Layout residents

BENGALURU: Residents of HSR Layout awoke to an unpleasant sight on Wednesday — smoke emanating from the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) plant close to Somasundarapalya Lake.

The citizens claimed the smoke was nothing but methane being emitted from the huge amount of highly combustible refuse-derived gasoline (RDF), being accumulated at the plant for a few years now.

Sankar Sarma, a resident, stated the smoke might be noticed for part an hour, and was later cleared by the plant team of workers. “The quantity of RDF being stored at the site has larger significantly. Due to intermittent rain and solar over the past few days and with 12,000 tonnes of flammable subject material stored in the open, methane was produced. We are at risk as even a small spark can lead to a massive fireplace. We alerted the government and KCDC workers cleared the area,” he stated.

Lamenting that there was no provision for a fire comfortable at the spot, he stated: “In case of an emergency, lend a hand needs to be sought fromoutside.”

Residents have approached government on many occasions and protested not easy closure of the plant.
