Bengaluru becoming noisier, Domlur is noisiest

BENGALURU: Blame it on speedy growth of vehicles coupled with lack of information at the well being hazards of sound pollution, Bengaluru is turning into noisier. While Domlur crowned the list of the noisiest commercial spaces in the city, MG Road isn't some distance in the back of.

While the permissible noise degree in commercial puts is 65 decibel, Domlur recorded an alarming 96, MG Road 86 and JP Nagar 81, says the Karnataka state pollution control board (KSPCB).

On Friday, a team of skilled audiologists headed by MSJ Nayak, checked the noise levels in the city’s commercial, residential and school zones. The noise audit was once done ahead of World Environment Day (June 5) to analyse sound pollution in the city.

Nayak said sound pollution has its affect on not just hearing abilities, however overall well being of the folk. “Any noise above 60-65dB reasons stress as the human body releases stress hormones. It also results in road rage and aggressive behaviour among drivers. Shockingly, the silent zones in the neighborhood of the universities also recorded greater than 70dB. The teacher in a study room speaks at 50-60dB and for the scholars to listen to the teacher, the variation of the noise inside and outside the school room must be 15dB,” he said.

The school zones in Jayanagar, Adugodi and Koramangala recorded greater than 70dB which hampers the kid’s skill to learn.

Geetha Vasudev, member, Domlur Layout RWA, said noise is largely due to vehicular movement on Old Airport Road that bears the brunt of vehicles coming from Inner Ring Road (Koramangala) and Outer Ring Road (Marathahalli).

Bhoopalan P Srinath, president, Bangalore Traders Association, who represents MG Road traders, said the location will not give a boost to except public shipping is encouraged and more parking puts are provided at the stretch. “If a consumer doesn’t get car parking zone on MG Road, s/he will go across the stretch to take U-turn, and it takes minimum 40 minutes,” he added.

“We’ll observe these junctions and absorb the issue with jurisdictional government. Compared to different metropolitan cities, Bengaluru is healthier. It is vehicular movement that largely results in sound pollution,” KSPCB chairperson Lakshman said.

An individual will get used to noise around him/her with consistent exposure. It’s best when an individual transfer to a quiet place, the variation will also be felt. But by that point, the noise would have had its affect at the behaviour of the individual
