Conservancy workers from nine panchayats in Coimbatore district threaten hunger strike

COIMBATORE: Around 50 sanitary and conservancy employees from 9 village panchayats petitioned the Coimbatore district collector on Monday stating that the panchayats weren't following the minimal wage prescribed through the Tamil Nadu government.
They said that their wage of Rs 2,300 a month used to be a small fraction of the minimal wage. They couldn’t meet their circle of relatives expenses with their meagre wage, they said.

They threatened to go on a hunger strike if their salaries aren't revised through August 14.

The employees, who got here from village panchayats like Kurudampalayam, 24 Veerapandi and Chinna Thadagam, said say their salaries had no longer been revised after the federal government order used to be issued.

“GO 62 beneath the Minimum Wages Act of 1948 issued in October closing yr obviously states that the wage for unskilled labour is Rs 13,000 per month or Rs 500 an afternoon,” said A Babu, who has been operating as a sweeper in Kurudampalayam panchayat for two decades.

“But our wage is Rs 2,300 a month or lower than Rs 100 an afternoon. It is lower than one fifth the federal government mounted minimal wage,” he said.

“The Coimbatore corporation has revised salaries of its employees. But our salaries haven’t been revised for more than a decade. We face the same inflation issues,” he added.

“Even when corporation employees began difficult Rs 300 an afternoon or as regards to Rs 9,000 a month, our salaries weren't revised,” said K Varadharaj a waterman in 24 Veerapandi village.


“We get up at four.45am to show up to paintings through 6am. We return home at 11am, most effective to return to paintings 4pm and paintings until eight pm,” he added.


“We paintings the same hours and do the same paintings as corporation employees. Then why the disparity in treatment,” he requested.


Workers said their salaries weren't ok for them to have the funds for housing, leases and education for their youngsters.
