Guj: Darbars stop Dalit groom from riding horse

AHMEDABAD: A Dalit groom was not allowed to experience a mare and his family members have been allegedly threatened for burning crackers all the way through a wedding procession in Parsa village in Mansa taluka of Gandhinagar district, around 30km from state capital - Gandhinagar. The incident came about on Sunday morning at about 10am.

The groom, Prashant Solanki, 27, an worker of Mehsana's Dudhsagar Dairy, narrated his ordeal and stated that he had never expected this sort of humiliation in his marriage. "I had travelled from Mehsana to Parsa in car and when we reached the bride's village, my relatives arranged a mare so that I can ride on it till the bride's house from the village entrance. But this did not go well with some Darbar community members, who had first objected to bursting crackers by my relatives and they became more aggressive when they saw a mare being arranged for me," Solanki informed TOI.


"The Darbars threatened to chop off my legs if I ride the mare and beat the owner of the mare. They even thrashed a DJ who was playing music in the wedding procession," added Solanki. The groom and other individuals of the wedding procession had to take safe haven out of doors the village for a few hours looking ahead to the law enforcement officials to protect them. "When the cops and the village sarpanch came, they arranged another mare from the village and took out the procession in police protection," stated the groom.


The bride, Varsha Parmar, 26, had to stay up for around 4 hours for the marriage because the Darbars didn't permit Solanki to go into inside the village on a mare, stated her mother Niru Parmar. "The Darbar community members threatened my son-in-law and his relatives and now we fear that they will take revenge on us," stated Varsha.


She added that she had to take around Rs 2 lakh on interest to behavior a grand wedding however the incident spoiled the rite.Vijay Patel, additional SP Gandhinagar, stated that they made correct police deployment for the wedding. "We will lodge an FIR once the wedding rituals are over and we will also provide protection to the Dalit family in the village," stated Patel.
