"We have issued a heatwave alert in most districts of the state for the next 48 hours. The temperature is expected to rise further in the central and interior parts of the state. Such conditions will prevail for the next few days. One or two places in the state may witness Norwester' rain or thundershowers in the next 24 hours," H R Biswas, the IMD's regional director of Bhubaneswar centre, stated.

The rise in temperature has been attributed to a weakening of southwest monsoon and blowing of westerly hot winds from central India. Monsoon had hit Odisha two days before its scheduled arrival on June 8, but may now not sustain the momentum. Official studies stated mercury at 16 places hovered over 40 degrees Celsius. Bhubaneswar and Baripada recorded 42.2in Bhubaneswar tdegrees each and every.
