GST slabs can be reduced to 3 in coming days: Sushil Modi

NEW DELHI: Slabs beneath Goods and Services Tax (GST) may also be reduced to 3 from 5 at the moment within the coming days for the ease of customers and companies, Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi stated.


In an interview to Bhasha, Modi, who also heads the high-level minister panel on GST, stated that there are 5 slabs in GST and "there is an intention to reduce it to three slabs but it will take some time" as it's associated with states' earnings.


Reacting to questions raised through former finance minister P Chidambaram that why charges of 88 items weren't reduced through the GST council in 2017, Modi stated: "This is not a decision where only the BJP government is involved. The decision was taken by the GST Council in which Congress-led governments are also involved".


He stated that after the implementation of GST, preliminary efforts were directed against making sure zero earnings loss. With the stabilisation of earnings, the speed on many items were progressively reduced.


Mounting attack on Chidambaram, Modi stated that states had lost self assurance within the then Congress government's policies, because of which GST could not be carried out all over its tenure.
