Hidkal dam to touch maximum level soon

BELAGAVI: It promises to be a excellent summer season with Raja Lakhamgouda Dam also known as Hidkal dam most probably to achieve full reservoir level (FRL) in the following few days.

The dam in-built 1977 is the supply of drinking water for Belagavi, Vijayapura and Bagalkot towns. Apart from it, it irrigates over three lakh hectares of agriculture land. It was once not reached FRL prior to now two years. With the region receiving excellent rainfall, there is satisfactory influx of water from Ghatprabha river within the catchment area which helped it store 38.42 tmc water as of July 20.


Last yr on July 20, the dam had best 17.68 tmc water making it unattainable to free up water from the dam for agricultural actions. About 18 MGD of water is provided to Belagavi town from this dam on a daily basis whilst water may be supplied to 22 villages including Sankeshwar, Hukkeri and Yamkanmardi towns from this dam beneath the multi- village scheme.


Kariyappa CN, govt engineer, KUWSDB, mentioned, "Due to good rainfall this year, Hidkal dam will reach FRL level in the next eight days. Rakaskop reservoir is already full and the gates have been opened. No shortage of water is expected this year," he mentioned.
