Netas in war of words over monsoon woes

BHUBANESWAR: As the Smart City went below water on Monday, opposition BJP and Congress got here down closely at the ruling BJD executive for failing to strengthen its drainage device.
State Congress president Niranjan Patnaik shared a video appearing waterlogging within the city on Twitter and said: "Distressing and depressing visuals from Bhubaneswar after today's rain. The BJD government in the state and the BJD-led BMC have completely failed the people. Is this the Smart City you brag about, Mr CM?"

He also shared a picture of children learning in a dilapidated college in Ganjam and taking a potholed road to college in Subarnapur to corner the federal government. BJP also criticized the federal government for poor control of urban drainage.

"The government has miserably failed to regulate and manage the rain and waste water in urban areas. The tall claims of the chief minister about the Smart City is evident," said state BJP spokesperson Pitambar Acharya.

Most low-lying areas of the city had been submerged on Monday. In many areas, drain water entered other people's properties. People blamed it at the poor drainage and sewerage device.

Housing and urban development minister Niranjan Pujari said, "We have called an emergency meeting to resolve the problem at the earliest. Things will not change overnight. Situation in the city is improving by the day."
